Taken from the game:

The Gurgan quietly spoke:
This earthquake is but an
omen. The tremors that pulled
the Crystals into the earth
and brought forth monsters
are nothing compared to the
Darkness which is to come . . .

But, hope is not yet lost.
Four souls will take up the
quest of the Light.

And so it begins . . .

* * *

Four orphans have been
raised by the priest Topapa
in the remote village of Ur.

A Crystal has sunk into the
earth due to the earthquake,
and the four boys have come
in an adventurous mood.

They had only intended to
test their courage . . .

What does this mean?

Lots of bad stuff has been happening in the world lately, namely an increase in monsters and disasters. One of the most recent disasters was an earthquake that sent a crystal into the earth.

Four orphans from Ur play around and discover a pit into the cave. They jump on in so they wouldn't be 'chicken'. Of course, they get trapped, and are forced to fight a flurry of monsters before they can escape, but not before encountering the crystal! A stronger monster guards the crystal. The orphans defeat it, and the crystal speaks to the children. Apparently, something really really bad is on the verge of happening, and the children must quest immediately to find the crystals and protect them from the Darkness. The crystal lends its power to the children, and nothing else is said.

The children speak to Topapa, their father and the village elder. He knows what has happened to you, since he has heard the prophecy of the Gurgan (a wise man). He immediately sends the orphans out to fulfill the will of the crystal. And so, the boys set out for a big adventure. Your first task is to solve a little ghost problem to the south . . .
